A Theology of Persecution

As a Christian organisation, Tears of the Oppressed upholds the Bible as the inspired Word of God in matters of faith and practice, being useful for correction, teaching, and guidance. From the Bible we develop our framework for understanding and responding to persecution.

As advocates of the persecuted church, Tears of the Oppressed has a theological understanding of persecution. The Bible has much to say about persecution; it is a likely prospect for those who follow Jesus. In fact, the Apostle Paul writes, “In fact, anyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). Certainly, we see this in the world today. Some Biblical principles are as follows:

  • The prophets were persecuted (Matt 5:12)
  • Jesus predicted His own persecution (Mark 10:33-34)
  • Jesus was persecuted (Mark 15:16-20)
  • Those who follow Jesus will also be persecuted (Mark 10:30, John 15:20, 1 Thess 2:2, 2 Tim 3:12)
  • Persecution occurs where the gospel is preached (Acts 8:1-3)
  • Jesus warns his followers in preparation for persecution (John 16:1-4)
  • In the midst of suffering, there is blessing (Matt 5:10,12)
  • Those who suffer in the name of Christ may be insulted, falsely accused (Matt 5:11)
  • Persecution may be severe physical punishment (2 Cor 11:16-29, 2 Cor 4:7-18)
  • Those who are persecuted must forgive their oppressors, because the oppressors do not know God, and do not know what they are doing (Luke 23:34, John 16:3)
  • Persecutors, by God’s grace, can repent and turn to God (1Tim 1:13)
  • Christians should pray for their persecutors, and bless them (Matt 5:44, Rom 12:14)
  • Jesus does not abandon His people to persecution, but sends His Holy Spirit (John15:26-16:4)
  • A time will come when God will be glorified and all suffering and persecution will cease (Rev 22)

Unity of the Church

The church is described as “the Body of Christ” (1 Cor. 12). Tears of the Oppressed does not discriminate between Christians of different denominations; recognising all who worship Jesus as Lord and Saviour as the “Body of Christ” in the world today. Those who suffer in his name, and those who suffer alongside them, are our concern.
