Who is Tears of the Oppressed?

Based in Canberra, Australia, Tears of the Oppressed is a Christian human rights organisation serving Christians under persecution, and those who suffer with them.

The Dalit people in India face severe oppression and discrimination.
Tears of the Oppressed does not discriminate between Christians of different denominations or traditions. Instead, we recognise all who worship Jesus as Lord and Saviour as the “Body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12) in the world today. We aim to assist those who suffer at the hands of oppressive governments, communities and individuals because of this allegiance to Christ.

Neither do Tears of the Oppressed discriminate between Christians on the basis of age, race, or gender: if a Christian or group of Christians is experiencing difficulty in their community because of their beliefs, we will do what we can to help them. In the past we have assisted Christians as culturally diverse as the Christians of the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, the Coptic Christians of Egypt, the Karen tribes of Burma, the Christians of Pakistan and India, and many, many others.

In addition, we assist those who suffer with them. Often members of other religious groups, or those with no religion, get caught up in waves of violence or persecution directed against Christians. Of course, we do not exclude someone who is part of a group on the basis that they do not adhere to the Christian faith. It is within our charter to serve “Christians, and those who suffer with them.”

Tears of the Oppressed does this by:

  • Raising awareness about the plight of suffering Christians
  • Informing Christians everywhere about the religious persecution suffered by their fellow believers in other places (through our newsletter, our website, speaking engagements and the like)
  • Informing politicians, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Department of Immigration about the extent of religious persecution worldwide, and drawing their attention to particular cases where they may have influence
  • Informing the media of the reality and extent of Christian persecution around the world
  • Lobbying the governments of the world on their behalf

When we receive news of atrocities against Christians communities, imprisonment of church leaders, or people whose lives and wellbeing are threatened because persecution has increased, we take this information to the Australian government, foreign governments, and their representatives to:

  • ensure their cases are heard and acknowledged
  • try to effect change in attitudes and behaviour in countries where persecution is an institutionalised practice
  • increase the safety and protection of Christians where they are a minority
  • relieve the suffering of those experiencing torture, imprisonment, abuse, and any other hardship because of their faith
